Rochester Hills irrigation case study
Imperial Mechanical Sprinkler Timer to Hunter Hydrawise HPC in Rochester Hills
A documented Hunter HydroTech controller modernization showing how an existing irrigation system can gain modern Wi-Fi control without unnecessarily replacing serviceable underground infrastructure.
The starting point
An older Imperial rotary timer was still controlling the Rochester Hills irrigation system
The property had an older Imperial rotary-style mechanical irrigation timer. Mechanical and electromechanical timers can continue working for many years, but they provide a very different scheduling and service experience from a modern digital Wi-Fi controller.
The goal of this project was not to tear out a usable sprinkler system simply because the controller was old. Hunter HydroTech treated the controller as one component of the larger system: station wiring, common wire, valves, piping, rotors and sprays still had to be considered separately.
Equipment change
Imperial mechanical controller → Hunter Hydrawise HPC
Hunter HydroTech uses Hunter Hydrawise-compatible equipment when the platform fits the property because it combines conventional professional irrigation control with app-based scheduling, remote access and easier zone testing.
That does not make Wi-Fi mandatory. Controller selection still depends on station count, available power, field wiring, expansion needs, sensor requirements and how the homeowner actually wants to operate the system.
Installation approach
The existing irrigation infrastructure was reused where it remained serviceable
The existing controller and connected irrigation conductors were identified before the old timer was removed.
The replacement controller was installed as the new command center for the existing irrigation system.
Existing station and common wiring can remain when it tests correctly and is suitable for continued use.
Each station on the new controller needs to operate the intended valve and sprinkler zone outside.
A successful controller power-up is not the end of the job. Connected zones are tested for valve response, shutoff, pressure and visible sprinkler problems.
Why this matters
Modern irrigation control without unnecessary underground replacement
This Rochester Hills project is a useful example of how a modular sprinkler system can be modernized. The controller can be upgraded while serviceable underground components remain in place.
For many existing systems, that provides a substantial usability improvement without turning a controller replacement into an unnecessary complete-system replacement.
What we verify after a smart-controller installation
- Controller power and normal display operation
- Correct station assignments
- Activation of connected irrigation zones
- Valve opening and complete shutoff
- Visible leak or low-pressure symptoms
- Rotor and spray operation
- Practical seasonal scheduling

Smart controllers are strongest when the field system is healthy
If a station still fails after the controller sends the proper command, the next step may involve sprinkler repair, valve diagnosis or field-wire troubleshooting rather than another controller.
